Byron Smith (34) of Hanceville was identified as the victim in an early morning crash on Highway 278 near Rainbow Crossing in Blount County. Smith was a 2005 graduate of Holly Pond before attending Wallace State and Athens University, where he received his math teaching degree in 2009. Smith started teaching in Etowah County in 2017 and was currently teaching math at the Career Technical Center in Etowah County. Smith leaves behind his wife Meg and two beautiful daughters, Amelia and Callan which were daddy’s little girls.
Alabama State Troopers said, “A two-vehicle crash at approximately 6:20 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, has claimed the life of a Hanceville man. Byron Holland Smith, 34, was fatally injured when the 2016 Ford Escape he was driving crossed the centerline and collided with a 2020 Mack tractor-trailer. Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was injured and was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital for treatment. The crash occurred on U.S. 278 near Hipp Road, approximately seven miles east of Blountsville. Nothing further is available as Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol Division continue to investigate.”
