At 12:45 PM, Sgt. Anthony Wheeler along with another BPD Sergeant conducted a traffic stop at 12th Street and Tuscaloosa Avenue. The traffic stop was performed after leads from an automotive theft investigation. During the stop, two suspects fled on foot. During the foot pursuit, one of the suspects retrieved a gun and struck Sgt. Wheeler multiple times. During the gun fight, the suspect was also struck. Both the Sergeant and suspect was transported to the UAB Medicine Hospital. Sgt. Wheeler is currently doing well. The other suspect was captured at a later time. At this time, two other people of interest was also detained. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is conducting the investigation into the shooting and will release further details at a later time.
